Ivan was born in the city of Contigo as a Jupiter Adept, fourteen years prior to the events of the first game. He was separated from his parents and sister, Hama, when he was given to the traveling merchant, Hammet. Hammet took him knowing that a prophecy foretold that Ivan would leave with warriors from Vale three years after a terrible storm tears across Mt Aleph. He was also to help Ivan find an item that he would require on his journey, which later became known as the Hover Jade. When Hammet settled in southeast Angara to found the Silk Road between Xian and Tolbi, Ivan became his servant.

When Hammet went to Vault around the time of the Mt. Aleph eruption, he took Ivan with him, feeling that the time of the prophecy was close, and entrusted the safety of the Shaman's Rod to the young Adept. However, just as they were preparing to return to Kalay, thieves stole the Rod in the chaos of the eruption. Hammet had little choice but to leave Ivan behind to recover it. Isaac and Garet arrived just as Hammet left, and helped Ivan uncover the thieves, defeat them, and return the stolen goods. Despite learning of their quest, Ivan also learned that Hammet had gone north, to the city of Lunpa. Fearing for his safety, Ivan set out immediately after retrieving the Shaman's Rod. He reached Lunpa too late, however: Hammet had already been taken. Unable to even enter the city, Ivan abandons the attempt and decides to return to Isaac and Garet to help them. He meets with them at the entrance to Goma Cave, just in time to help uncover the entrance.

As Ivan travels with them, nothing happens particularly to him until the group reaches Lama Temple. His sister, Hama, is master of the temple. Although he does not recognize her, having been taken away at a very young age, she knows not only him, but every member of the group. She reveals to Ivan his status as a Jupiter Adept, as well as his dormant ability of prediction. After the arrival of Feizhi confirming that the transfer of psynergetic abilities was possible, Hama passed on the Psynergy Reveal to him, allowing the group to cross Lamakan Desert.
